The mitochondria can cause multiple diseases, one of which is Alpers' Disease. Progressive Infantile Poliodystrophy, commonly known as Alpers Disease, is a disease that is a mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome which is a progressive neurodevelopmental disease. Alpers is characterized by 3 main symptoms. Those 3 symptoms are dementia, seizures, and liver disease. Some other symptoms of Alpers are blindness and cerebral degeneration. The disease occurrence is 1 in 100,000 people. Most individuals do not show symptoms at birth and develop normally for weeks to years before symptoms occur. It is an autosomal recessive disease caused by mutation in the gene for the mitochondrial DNA polymerse POLG.
This is only one reason why the Mitochondria should not be the Organelle in Chief. There are multiple diseases that also deal with mitochondrial dysfunction such as Kearns-Sayre Syndrome which is a neuromuscular disorder. I would never vote for the Mitochondria because of all the diseases that it can cause. There is no way that we can have the Mitochondria our Organelle in Chief.
